It all began by accident....

I have always adored portraits; looking at them and making them. How to capture that certain mannerism, feeling or expression. How do others approach that challenge? Thats the magic of a portrait. It doesn't just look like the subject, you can read the personality through the canvas. But its also the hardest part to get right.
​
I wanted a really honest, descriptive, joyful and beautiful portrait of my children. I wanted something which would record them just as they are, just as they were, in the past, present and future, to keep forever. I researched phenomenally expensive portrait painters but had no way of knowing if these were just beautiful likenesses or if they did capture the subjects' soul.
I couldn't be confident of a wonderful collaboration and I couldn't afford a mistake so I gave up looking. One day I was with a friend and started talking about my love of portraits and of how I'd love one of my children and she said - well why don't you make one then? How ridiculously obvious! How blind we can be. So I started. It was really hard work - I'd chosen to do their faces on a large scale all with difficult expressions and I made it out of collage - my favourite medium - filling it with words, photographs and images relevant to each of them.

When I first saw the portrait of our dog Ted which we commissioned for my son Tommy's birthday, I was so taken and utterly delighted with how Tiggy has captured Ted's likeness and personality. The detail in the collage makes the piece so special, tiny pictures of our family members and words with meaning all hidden in the artwork.

Tiggy has made us a wonderful portrait to remember our beloved Honey dog. We contributed photos, memories and Honey's special quirks which she incorporated into the portrait. It's very clever how she has created a perfect likeness of Honey with texture and depth, whilst including words and photos which become apparent the closer you get. The result is a very personal and emotional portrait. It has pride of place in the house where everyone can see it from afar and close up. People enjoy trying to spot different members of the family and other special aspects such as therapy dog and squirrel obsession!
Its a real talking point, a very precious possession and a wonderful memorial.
